Between

Backstory

“A conversation between two friends - one depressed about the past and another anxious about the future. This song alludes to the teachings of renowned author and speaker Michael Singer, which have been very helpful to me. Singer teaches that much of what happens to us in life is outside of our control - like the weather - and we can only control how we respond to those events. He also teaches that, when we live in the past, we often feel regret and depression and when we live in the future, we often feel fear and anxiety. Peace and love abide in the present - right there between.”

Lyrics

Have you been singing with the ghosts in the night?
Recreating these old crimes?
While the records just keep playin’ these settled scores?
Have you been digging up bones in the night?
Reenacting these old fights?
Don't know why you’re staging, waging these ancient wars.

Our history won't defeat us no
But sometimes it feels like it might
And History won’t repeat itself
Unless it's inside of our minds

We cross over and back
future to past
But the truth walks out on a string
right there between
right there between

Well, I've been wearing myself out in a fight
with the rain and the lightning.
I don't know how to stop all these coming storms.
And I’ve been huddled by the coals in the night
Telling stories all my life
While the mountains stayed unclimbed
so I stayed warm

The mystery won't defeat us no
But sometimes it feels like it might
The mystery won’t defeat us no
unless it's inside of our minds

We cross over and back
future to past
but the truth walks out on a string
right there between
right there between

When life breaks our hearts
all those scattered shards
get swept up and settle in our minds
And when the light
hits them just right
there's a beauty in that shine

And then love walks out on a string
right here between
right here between
