The Waiting Room
Backstory
My wife and I have spent some hard and traumatic times in waiting rooms over the past several years. I started this song after a visit to Phoenix Children’s Hospital to visit a family member, and I finished it after our dear friends lost their child following several days of waiting in that same hospital.
Lyrics
Did the darkness
Stay with you?
Is the empty
With you still?
Every morning
Every evening
When the light goes to sleep behind the hills.
Hospital chairs
Hold so much despair
So you paced with a prayer and the wait
And the weight of it all.
In the waiting room
bracing for bad news
Nothing left to do
But wait
For the weight of it all.
Is the darkness
Always with you?
Is the empty
With you still?
Heavy mourning-
Heavy evening
When the light goes to sleep behind the hills.
The chaplain’s refrain
Saying your love and pain
They are one and the same
When you’ve lost
One you love with your all.
You hold the weight of it all
So we’ll hold you
…hold the weight of it all
And we’ll hold you
…hold the weight of it all
We’ll hold you.
