Wings

Backstory

“Inspired by someone close to me who left an abusive relationship after many years. Since releasing this song, I’ve received several messages from people who have said ‘this is my story too’ or ‘this reminds me of my mother’. This song is dedicated to each of those individuals and all women who’ve had the courage to fly away.”

Lyrics

Pretty wings get nervous when the shadows grow long
On the banks of this lake, the storm will come
When that wind shuffles in, one more time then she's gone
This was already spelled in the stars

She'd turn a cheek like Jesus
Forgive him just like on St Paul
She needs a city of angels
To fly away from it all

Early on she knew it, knew it, something ya was clearly amiss
He did his talking with an elevated volume ya and sometimes a fist
With the fire in his eyes, he couldn't resist
It was already spelled in the scars

She'd turn a cheek like Jesus
Forgive him just like St Paul
She needs a city of angels
To fly away from it all

He was always swinging it side to side
Hope on a string it just caught her eye
She didn't know she was hypnotized
He'd always cut and then cauterize
(He caught her eyes)

Warning Bells called out and cut a crack through the air
They echoed like the bells neath the steeples of the churches ya but she couldn't hear

She'd turn a cheek like Jesus
Forgive him just like St Paul
She needs a city of angels
To fly away from it all

He thinks he's just like Jesus
A prophet in his own town
But he'll take the silver, twist the nail
Kick the dog and cheat and steal
Broken honor up for sale,
King of this town
Ya, he ain't wearing no crown

He'd always say vile things
Wouldn't let her have nice things
He thought he clipped her wings
Now she cut that string

She's a bird set free
She's a bird set free
On a prayer and a wing
It's time to sing
She'd turn a cheek like Jesus
Forgive him just like St Paul
She found a city of angels
And got away from it all
